在托福Speaking Section 開始之前,會請考生先回答一道題:please describe a city you live in.

Question 1: Please describe an actor, musician or artist whose work you do not admire. Please give specific details and explanations.

The musician whose work I can’t stand the most has got to be Britney Spears. Firstly, she epitomizes the classic manufactured pop sound that lacks any kind of soul or feeling. For example, her voice is manipulated to sound too artificial and is simply quite annoying. Another reason for a lack of admiration is that she squandered her singing talent through singing pop songs throughout her whole career. From a documentary I once saw of her singing at a young age, her voice could have been suitable for music of greater depth, such as Broadway shows.

Question 2: Should parents help their children in the process of choosing universities? Please give specific details and explanations.

Personally, I don’t think parents should help their children in the process of choosing universities,
because, first of all, children need to learn how to think on their own two feet. If parents always help their children make decisions, they will never learn to grow up and will always have to rely on others. In the long-run, they may become weak in thinking and mindlessly agree with other people’s opinions. On top of that, parents should use this opportunity to train their children to be responsible. Choosing a university is in some ways like choosing a spouse; you have to love what you choose and choose what you love. Once they embark on a university life of their choice, they
can also start learning to make other choices that will affect their lives.

I’m all for the idea of parents being involved when their kids are making their university choice. Firstly, their kids are obviously less experienced than their parents and any input and opinion from people older and wiser surely can’t be a bad thing. At the tender age of seventeen or eighteen, most kids would welcome a tip or two. Secondly, parents need to show concern for their kids, and if they don’t even care about one of the biggest choices their kids will have to make, what is this saying about their parenting?

Success is a journey, not a destination.
